UNIVERSITY SITE
Auckland Study By Commission (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 24. The Commission on University Education had received a number of submissions on the Auckland University site controversy, the chairman of the three-man commission (Sir David Parry, Q.C.) said today.
Before it could suggest that the Auckland University council should reopen the site question, however, it would have to be satisfied beyond any reasonable doubt that the Princes street area was unsuitable to meet the university’s needs, he said. The commission would continue to study the situation in the light of all the needs of the university system as a whole. During its stay in Auckland, the commission had attempted to get the whole tone of the university “from top to bottom.’’ and had met students, professors, and lecturing staff, he said. It had heard from lecturers on salaries, promotions, conditions, and load of work generally. “No-one is ever satisfied with his salary,” said Sir David Parry. “Many are not satisfied with the rate of promotion.” The commission had given an account of its general impressions to the university council, but would not reach any conclusions until it had visited all the universities. The commission will visit Hamilton tomorrow to inspect the site of the proposed branch university. It will leave for Christchurch on Saturday, and later travel to Dunedin before returning to Wellington to complete its report.
