New Assistant For Herter

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 22.

The State Department announced today that the United States Ambassador to the Philippines (Mr Charles Bohlem) had been appointed special assistant on Soviet affairs to the Secretary of State (Mr Christian Herter).

Mr Bohlen, who is 55, speaks Russian fluently. His appointment as assistant to Mr Herter was rumoured several months ago and Mr Herter acknowledged at a press conference that such an appointment was being considered.
