CLUB’S LOSS OF £193
Annual Report At Westport (From Out Own Reporter) WESTPORT, September 16. The Westport Jockey Club's accounts for last season showed a loss of £193 7s 3d after a T.A.B. distribution of £2839 3s lOd. the allocation based on five days' racing for the previous season. said the president (Mr T. M. Scanlon) at the annual meeting of members. Racing for both meetings was conducted under satisfactory conditions. which were a big improvement on the disastrous previous year, said Mr Scanlon. Stakes were maintained at the same level as last year and in spite of the drop in totalisator turnovers all over the country the club had increased its combined on and off-course total by 3 per cent. Last year's increase was 12J per cent, and the previous year's increase was 18 per cent.
In view of the taxation on the club and the over-all dwindling returns it was extremely grateful for the small increase. With this total the club would retain its position with the highest allocation of the racing clubs in the Greymouth metropolitan district, a position it had held for some years although it was not centrally situated in that area. The president said that during the season the combined course committee had erected under contract a new amenities block, which would fill a long-felt want.
No payment was shown on the balance-sheet for this building as the trotting club, which also used the course, had made the first payment and the final one would be made and shown by the jockey club in the coming year’s balancesheet when this amount had been met. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr A. G. Colvin; president. Mr J. C. Craig; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. R. Jones and F. Neilson; treasurer, Mr P. Colvin; auditor, Mr R. Avery; committee, Messrs R. C. Borlase, J. Byrne, A E. Chamberlain, M. Cosgrove, T. IJ. Corby, D. S, Donaldson. L. R. Herbert. B. Lovell, L. J. Menzies. G. McLaughlin. N. Perkins, W. Petersen, C. N. Robinson, J. Sloan and C. Wilson Croft. The retiring president, Mr T. M. Scanlon, who did not seek reelection. said that he had enjoyed very much his association with the club over a period of more than 22 years. The club had progressed considerably in that period, but there was still much which should be done. The meeting appointed Mr Scanlon a life member of the club and also expressed appreciation of the work done by Mr R. C. J. Powell, who did not seek re-election for the committee.
