STRONG RUN BY SISTER BELLE AT TAKANINI

•‘The Press’ Special Service

AUCKLAND. Sept. 16.

Horses engaged at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Paeroa on Friday put on an excellent show of fast work at. Takanini this morning when the inside of the No. 2 grass was available for galloping. The Poland Cup runner Sister Belle was impressive running a quick mile, and Donna Paola, Greensleeves. Sunny Bay, and Commodore Roberts did good sprints. Sunny Bay and Commodore Roberts went half a mile, which Sea Gold also managed attractively.

The stablemates Barobar and Daysun ran a mile pleasingly and so did Beau Way, which had the assistance of Zahara. The going was good. After starting four or five lengths behind. Beau Way (Parkinson) was too good for Zahara (Manning) over a mile in Imin 47 3-ssec. Zahara kept clear, going freely until three furlongs from the finish. Beau Way then ran to Zahara strongly and in the finish he was three or four lengths to the good. It was sound work in preparation for the Poland Cup. Barobar (Hooton) ran a neck or so ahead of Daysun (Wyatt) near the finish of a mile in Imin 45 2-ssec, the last six furlongs in Imin 17sec. Barobar is fresh after a spell and she has been working accordingly. She has not been much tried at a middle-distance, so her form in 'he Poland Cup will be interesting. By the look of him. Daysun is thriving. Sister Belle (Purcell), with a feather-weight, easily had the better of Straight Lead (Vincent) while running a mile in Imin 44 2-ssec. Sister Belle dashed clear from the start, and after striding along very freely ended with a slight lead. It looks as though she improved with her race at Thames last Saturday.

Sailor’s Legend (Williamson) and Belwood (Sutherland) led Lochwood (N. Campbell) by three lengths at the finish of a mile in Imin 48 2-ssec. the last five furlongs in Imin 6sec. Lochwood was not inclined to exert himself. The other two also finished comfortably. ' With a light-weight and a

quick start. Sunny Bay (Hudson) sprinted half a mile in 48 4-ssec, which was not bettered. It was a fine gallop. Now that the ground is firmer and more to her liking. Sunny Bay might soon show form, but from No. 20 she faces a hard assignment in the Flying Handicap on Friday. Commodore Roberts (Holland) finished half a mile nicely in 49 4-ssec. Probably he will be the favourite for the Kaihere Hack Handicap, and having the inside at the start he is well placed to give a good account of himself. His stablemate. Wakatere (Holland) strode easily over half a mile, making speed only for a bit in the middle part. Daily Mail II (Hillis) and Sea Gold (Meynell) were three lengths ahead of Nukuatu (R. Smith) which finished comfortably at the end of half a mile in 50sec. They went fast for a start and steadied toward the finish. Sea Gold is a four-year-old gelding by Gold Script from Sea Mist in K. J. Cunningham’s team. He might be a prospect in the Kerepehi Hack Handicap. Not Hurried Summer Glow (Watton) and Happy Laughter (Hughes) went the first furlong quickly and then ran easily to the finish of half a mile in 52sec. Melanion (Hughes) ran a working gallop over half a mile in 54sec. Summer Glow and Melanion will be resuming in the Flying Handicap after a let-up from racing. Minaea (Holland) and Kalainira (Andrews) kept together over half a mile in 51 l-ssec. There was little between Donna Paola (Willetts) and Greensleeves (Wyatt) while running five furlongs solidly.-in imin 2sec. the best of the morning. Donna Paola was a disappointment when she lasi), raced in the Admiralty Handicap at Ellerslie on August 22. but the chances are she will do better; in the Flying Handicap this week. Drumhirk (Hughes) was kept slightly behind injthe «early part and was travelling nicely alongside Summer Sari (Watton). Glenfar (Manning), and Alfreda (Holland) at the finish of half a mile in 50sec. Drumhirk has not been asked for much at speed lately, but there is not much of him and a light preparation seems to suit him best. He; might be hard to beat in the second division of the Ngatea Plate. Teddy (Manning), which has freshened, finished his work with half a mile in 55sec.
