WINDSOR BLOCK DRAINAGE
Board's Policy On Piping Drains
The piping of outfall drains in the Windsor area of Burwood from Alice annd Liggins streets into Horseshoe Lake, as proposed by the City Council, would prevent the Christchurch Drainage Board from proceeding with the stormwater drainage of the area, the works committee reported to the board. _ . The land concerned in the proposed reserve was very swampy and covered with trees, the committee said. The cost of laying the pipes in the area would be prohibitive, thus making the whole scheme uneconomic. If pipes were laid they would be half out of the ground, and as the council would have to fill the area when the reserve was formed they would probably be damaged. In any case, the council had only been asked to approve of the open drain beyond Alice street, as there was already an open drain at Liggins street which was considered satisfactory, the committee said. Reporting on a letter from Mr A. H. Jecks, the Acting-City Engineer, on the Windsor block drainage, the committee said the council had asked whether a lower standard of drainlaying would be acceptable for connexions than was required for connexions to foul sewers. “All work has to be done under the Drainage and Plumbing Regulations, and the board cannot accept any lower standard,” the committee said.
A similar reply was given to the council’s request on sullage and stormwater lines proposed in the Tankerville road area, Hoon Hay. The board agreed to carry out its part of the Tankerville road work at an estimated cost of £6400.
