SOCCER REFEREES RESIGN
Lack Of Support Alleged "The Press" Special Service NAPIER, Sept. 15. In protest against “the lack of support we receive from players and spectators’’ two Hawke’s Bay Football Association referees, Messrs G. W. Baxter and H. Hickey, both of Napier, have resigned. To a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Football Association executive Mr Baxter reiterated earlier representations complaining that players had defied referees on many occasions. Referees had to suffer abuse from players and spectators alike. Mr H. F. Smith, secretary of the association, said: “The problem of unruly behaviour is something that we are -gravely concerned with, not only in Hawke's Bay, but throughout New Zealand. It is being tackled by the New Zealand association on a national basis.” The association felt that a possible solution lay in closer liaison between referees and clubs. It was hoped that referees could be invited to the next annual meetings of clubs, so that they could explain the rules and conduct expected of players.
