History Of Hungary
Sir, —Permit me to make some comments on Denis Sinor’s book, “History of Hungary,” reviewed in your paper on Saturday: An unfortunate hour it was, indeed, which produced Admiral Horthy, a forerunner of Hitler, Franco, Mussolini. He made his entry into Budapest on the tail of the Rumanian occupying forces, who overthrew the Communists. The honest admiral broke his oath of allegiance, handing over his lawful monarch to his enemies. The moderate Horthy led his stormtroops personally on raids in the country, hanging innocent people by the thousands, mostly Jews, the favourite scapegoat in Eastern Europe. Hungary gained complete independence, indeed, from the healthy influence of the Western democracies, and became the first, most faithful, mercenary of Hitler. Horthy is directly responsible for the present enslavement of the country by declaring war on the Allies, and following the German line as closely then as the present leaders follow the Russian now. Mr Sinor’s “History of Hungary” must be a sad book.—Yours, etc., P. September 14, 1959.
