Refugees
Sir, —Recently you printed a letter under the heading “Refugees” in which “Wondering” asked whether the relatively small amounts which could be given by individuals of this country could have any real effect on so vast a problem and Whether, in fact, the whole matter was not the responsibility of United Nations. May I, who have had some experience of this problem in various parts of the world, take it upon myself to try to give some enlightenment. Surely the first part of the query can be answered by reference to the parable of the widow’s mite. As for the second part, it is true that the United Nations World Relief Organisation is responsible for the co-ordination of relief work throughout the world. But the power of the United Nations to act in any matter stems from the support given by the member nations, of which New Zealand is one. So the United Nations World Relief Organisation is as effective as we, the citizens of one of the member nations, enable it to be.—Yours, etc., SERVITOR SERVITANS. September 14, 1959.
