COLOMBO STREET OVERBRIDGE
Service Duct Nearly Completed
A tunnel to carry electric cable and gas pipes under the railway lines by the present Colombo street level crossing will be completed this week, to complete the first stage in the construction of the new overbridge. A spokesman for the contractors (Messrs C. S. Luney and Son) said there were only backfilling to do to complete the job. “Work is virtually finished. All the concreting has been done and a retaining wall has been built at each end of the tunnel,” he said. Known as a service duct, the tunnel is 472 ft long. Bft wide and 6ft high—big enough for a man to walk through. The tunnel runs from the footpath on the station side of Moorhouse avenue to the goods sheds side of Carlyle street. A manhole in the centre of the tunnel and one at the Carlisle street end will provide entry for service men.
The retaining walls at each end of the tunnel will become part of the completed overbridge.
