A secret call yesterda; by the Conservative Party chairman, Lord Hailsham, on the Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) had started off immense pre-election activity in Britain, according to the ' Daily Express.” All parties are now gearing themselves for a sudden announcement of the General Election date. There is speculation that the announcement may be made at the week-end. Lord Hailsham, unseen by reporters, slipped into 10 Downing Street, alone. He talked with the Prime Minister Mr about 45 minutes. Later Mr Macmillan held five hours of discussions with other Ministers on election tactics. The “Daily Telegraph's political correspondent said that the secretary of the Labour Party, Mr Morgan Phillips, yesterday' sent out what amounted to warnings to the secretaries of all organisations affiliated with the party, telling them to be prepared. The correspondent said the current political climate was so obviously favourable to the Government that few politicians believed that there was any likelihood of the election being delayed beyond the autumn.
