ROUTINE’S WIN

Chesterfield Handicap (NX. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Aug. 30 The New Zealand mare Routine made an impreosive start in Australian racing when sne won toe first division of the Chesterfield Handicap at Moonee Valley yesterday. Routine, whicn already has been heavily backed in doubles lor tiie Caulfield Cup, finished fast to beat Teak Wood by a neck, with Meadow Bird a neck away, third. Owner Mr D. N. Thompson said after today's win that Routine would be set for both tire Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. “It is likely that - she will be confined to weight-for-age races leading up to the Caulfield Cup,” Mr Thompson said. Routine has 7-13 in the Caulfield Cup and 7-11 in the Melbourne Cup Routine has become second favourite for the Caulfield Cup follow- ‘ ing this win. Mr Thompson was surprised at Routine’s forward showing so early in her preparation. “Only two months ago sne was still in a paddock in New Zealand with shocking cuts on her legs after she had got into a barbed-wire fence." said Mr Thompson. “She has been in work only one month." Mr Thompson said that Routine showed her best form at distances beyond 10 furlongs. "She realty has a fine finishing burst in long races,” he said. Mr Thompson added that while Routine would appreciate the mile and a half of the Caulfield Cup, he considered she would be even better over the longer journev in the Melbourne Cup. Routine's win was an outstanding! performance. She was pocketed at: the three furlongs post and jockey I W. Williamson had to ease her off -: the heels of another ' runner. Wil-1 hamson then let the mare gain balance again. He moved her up to I be fifth into the straight, but going i ■well. When Williamson asked for an effort with about three-quarters of i a furlong to go Routine bounded up to the leaders. Williamson had her under a good hold as she went past the post.
