RACING Melody Man Wins Main Race at Avondale

■*TM Press' Special Service

AUCKLAND, August 30.

Melody Man, from Woodville, scored a meritorious and popular victory in the Coronation Handicap, the first leg of the double, at the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting yesterday.

For a few strides inside the last furlong when he veered suddenly to the outside it seemed his chance was lost but in the end he won decisively by a length.

Melody Man bad not before raced the right hand way and that more than likely accounted for his being inclined to bore out.

A five-year-old gelding by Oman from Broiefort Melody. Melody Man is raced by Messrs T. W. Bognuda and V. A. Draper and trained by P. Burgess. He was ridden by W. A. Smith.

Smith also won the Sherrif Handicap, the second leg of the double, on Peter Quex.

The Melody Man-Peter Quex combination paid £33 3s 6d for £l.

It was the third time recently Smith had won both legs of a double. .He scored on Vitapointe and Admiral’s Fair at Riccarton on August 8, and on Elrey and Salt Spray at Carterton on August 14. Attila, which finished third in the Sherrif Handicap, looked unlucky. His rider, H. N. Rauhihi, was not ready when the field was sent away and for the first two furlongs or more had only one foot in the stirrups. A report from the judicial committee which inquired into the start said that Rauhihi had dismounted in the starting gates without the permission or knowledge of the starter.

The weather was fine although cold and the going was holding.

The totalisator on-course handled £129,914 ss, including £19,666 15s on doubles compared with £146,284 10s last year. Melody Man’s Win Tarry Town showed up in the first furlong of the Coronation Handicap and with nine furlongs to run was disputing the pace with Stylish Officer. Vivian and Flying Satchel. Seven furlongs out Tarry Town, On Demand and Stylish Officer ran together at a leisurely pace ahead of Otara. Flying Satchel, Bretton, Delloch. Peterford, Waipari and Melody Man.

A little further on On Demand went clear. Passing the half mile he was out by five or six lengths from Waipari. Otara and Tarry Town which ran close together three lengths ahead of Delloch, Melody Man, and Flying Satchel. Gold Kip was then one of the runners near the back.

On Demand began to shorten stride as they began the run home. Otara, Delloch and Melody Man improved to be in close pursuit ana Waipari showed up toward the outside. Galloping strongly in the centre of the track Melody Man had the measure of the others with a furlong to go and in spite of changing his course he won by a length. Delloch was second by three-quarters of a length from Otara and Gold Kip made ground for fourth. On Demand was fifth then came Peterford, Vivian, Nine Days, Waipari, Uppercut, Tarry Town and Sarina.

Peter Quex Gets Up Sunny Bay dropped behind in the early rush and Mesopotamia. Sir Gabador and Triple Chance were quickly prominent in the Sherrif Handicap. Sir Gabador took up the running by a length from Triple Chance at the end of a furlong There was a short

gap to Mesopotamia. Nimbula, Dontellus. Attila, Golden Countess, Peter Quex and Bell Block. Nearing the straight Sunny Bay was almost alongside Sir Gabador and Nimbula. Triple Chance, Indian Mars. Dontellus. Mesopotamia and Peter Quex came next. Sir Gabador tired starting the last furlong and Triple Chance was hard pressed to keep up. Nimbula spoilt his chance by veering out. Indian Mars and Attila looked likely until close to the end when Peter Quex came with a strong run to gain victory from Indian Mars in the last stride or two. Attila was a close third and The Answer came from the back for fourth. Mesopotamia was fifth ahead of Triple Chance, Bell Block, Sunny Bay. Dontellus and Sir Gabador.
