CITY COUNCIL ELECTION
Cr. Guthrey Not Standing
Cr. A. R. Guthrey, chairman of the City Council’s works and airport committee for the last three years and a member of the council since 1944 reiterated yesterday that he would not be a candidate for re-election in November.
Cr. Guthrey returned to Christchurch on Monday evening after being overseas on a combined business and pleasure trip for the last few weeks. While he was away the Citizens’ Association announced 18 of its candidates for the 19 council seats, and it was made clear that Cr. Guthrey could have the nomination if he wished.
“No, I am quite definite,” was his reply yesterday when asked if he had been persuaded to stand.
With a considerable expansion of his business interests within the last two years, Cr. Guthrey feels that he can no longer give the time necessary to City Council duties, and for the chairman of one of the major committees that time is considerable. “In any case,” he added, “it is good for councillors to change from time to time and for younger men to take over the work.”
Cr. Guthrey was only 28 when elected to the council 15 years ago, shortly after his return from overseas Army service during which he had a distinguished record and was badly wounded.
