NIGHT FIRES IN GISBORNE
Detectives Seeking Incendiarist (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, August 17. A full investigation into the fires on Saturday night at the premises of A. Christie, Ltd., Gisborne, at the rear of the “Gisborne Herald,” have confirmed that the fires were deliberately lit. All available detectives in Gisborne are engaged. Their work has been increased by the breaking and entering into three other city premises. “On Saturday night entry was forced at the Gisborne railway station and some luggage held at the station was interfered with,” Senior-Sergeant J. G. B. Rossiter said. “The premises of Johnson and Scragg at the lower end of Grey street were also entered on Saturday night but there was no reported theft. An attempt was also made to break into the premises of Murray Roberts and Company, Ltd., during the weekend but was not successful. The Cisborne Courthouse was also broken into last week-end, but nothing was stolen.” |
