Stereophonic Sound

Sir, —I would like to assure “Audiophile” that both my ears function perfectly, and express my gratitude for his concern. I must agree that realism is what the recording companies aim for, but it is clearly impossible for a recording to be “indistinguishable from the original” as long as living rooms stubbornly refuse to become concert halls. Furthermore if “Audiophile” had read either the letter of “Britannicus” or myself, he would have realised that neither of us objects to realism itself. Stereo does great things to recordings of railway engines, racing cars, and tropical jungles. For music, however, the ability to pick out the instruments adds nothing, any more than the ability to see or touch the musicians would. When he says “hi-fi stereo is on the up and up,” I am-afraid I must agree with him.—Yours, etc.,

MONEO.
