SACRED HEART PRODUCTION
“The Gondoliers”
Popular
The popular appeal of Gilbert and Sullivan productions is shown by their frequent performance and the widespread demand for them. The Sacred Heart Girls’ College production of “The Gondoliers,” has needed two extra performances to cater for the demand for seats.
A great deal of work must have been done for last evening's production, not so much with stage sets —which were sparse but adequate within the limits of the confined stage—but with the dancing, acting and singing. “The Gondoliers” was produced by the school’s sisters and Mrs J. Davies. The “male” members were charmingly aware of their unaccustomed role. Although their voices lacked the male timbre, the girls carried themselves in a suitably “male” manner. In the opening scene the gondoliers made their entrance with a swagger and their exaggerated comical expressions fitted the role.
The generous but penniless Duke of Plaza Toro, played by Thea Kerkvliet, with his delightful facial expressions—notably the leer accompanying “you lucky dog”—and clear enunciation, was one of the most successful on stage. The duchess (Mary Walsh) and their daughter (Marilyn Davies) acted with the appropriate mien of haughty superiority. Some of the best singing was heard from Tessa (Joyce McKay) and her partner. She acted with charming personality and her voice had an equally appealing quality. Songs from all the actors were clearly audible and well executed.
The costumes were extremely colourful.
Although some of the finer points were missed by the cast, the gaiety and spirit of Gilbert and Sullivan were maintained throughout. “The Gondoliers” will be presented each night until Thursday.
