COMMONWEALTH SCHOLARS

Early Consideration Of New Scheme

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Dr, F. J. Llewellyn), who was a New Zealand representative at the recent Commonwealth Education Conference, intends to make the report available to all the universities and agricultural colleges in the Dominion so that they can consider immediate participation in the scheme.

“It would be a great pity if the consideration of the scheme has to await the setting up of all national committees so I intend to supply the report to all interested institutions so that the staffs may begin to think about possible places they could make available for overseas scholars in special fields,” Dr. Llewellyn told the Canterbury University Council yesterday afternoon. ‘‘This Commonwealth scholarship scheme is of tremendous importance and of tremendous potential to scholarship in this country,” Dr. Llewellyn said. New Zealand had offered 25 scholarships, the United Kingdom 500, Canada 250, Australia 100, India 100, Pakistan 30, Malaya 12, Nigeria 12, Ghana 10, Rhodesia and Nyssaland 10, Ceylon 8, and East Africa 4. It was envisaged that the value of each would be about £lOOO and would cover travel, maintenance, textbooks, fees and all other expenses. In addition there would be prestige fellowships, double this value, to bring scholars of established reputation to Commonwealth countries round the periphery for short periods, compared with the two years of the general scholarships. New Zealanders would also benefit Dr. Llewellyn said the United Kingdom had indicated that it might offer about 15 of its 500 scholarships to this country. Canada and Australia were likely to invite men from the Dominion and. with other invitations from other countries, it seemed that about 25 scholarships might be available for persons wishing to go overseas.
