FIVE RESCUED FROM CAR

Vehicle Skidded Into Stream

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 16.

A man dived off the Awanui bridge at midnight on Saturday to rescue five people trapped in a car sunk in the tidal stream below. Two of the passengers in the car are still in hospital today. The other three were not injured. The car skidded from the bank as it struck a bridge parapet and plunged into five feet of water. Mr Cecil Wikitera, who lives nearby and was just going to bed, heard cries from the car for help.

He dived into the stream and swam to the car. Some of the passengers were already struggling from the extensively damaged car, and Mr Wikitera helped them and rescued the’ remainder.

Those in hospital are Mr and Mrs H. Hamlin, of Kaitaia, a young couple, who suffered superficial 'wounds and shock. The driver, Kenneth Ingley, and his wife, also of Kaitaia, and a fifth person, an unidentified man, were not injured.
