Makarios Attacks Enosis Supporters

(Rec. 10 p.m.) NICOSIA, August 15. Archbishop Makarios, preaching today at the monastery of Kykko in the mountains 60 miles from Nicosia, strongly attacked “certain circles” who recently sent anonymous letters and distributed leaflets criticising the Zurich and London agreement on Cyprus and threatening violence.

“What are these people seeking?” asked Archbishop Makarios. “To overthrow the agreements? “Only the people of Cyprus have the right to do this,” he said. “Cypriots will not tolerate such kinds of heroes, and will not tolerate a conspiracy against the peace of Cyprus by cowardly and morbid somnambulists.” he said. A new undercover organisation, calling itself K.E.M., has recently distributed leaflets in Nicosia criticising the agreements and supporting General Grivas, the former head of Eoka.

Reuters reported that Mr Auf Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot deputy leader, declared in a press statement today that General Grivas “has nothing to do with Cyprus.” He added: “The sooner Archbishop Makarios tells him to keep out of these affairs, the better it will be for us all.” Mr Denktash was commenting on a reported statement by General Grivas in Athens last night complaining that he had not yet heard from Archbishop Makarios

on questions he had raised about whether the Cyprus republic will stay within the Commonwealth, the Turkish Vice-President’s powers and the separation of municipalities. “If Grivas is allowed to continue interfering in our affairs and thus to create suspicion and distrust in Cyprus, the time will come when it will be impossible to stop him,” Mr Denktash said. “The question of the Commonwealth will be decided by the Cyprus people when the time comes, and Grivas has nothing to do with it,” he added. In Galeta, south-west Cyprus. Bishop Kyprianos of Kyrenia, a staunch supporter of enosis—union with Greece —roused shouts of “long live Makarios” from Cypriot youths after an address in the local church today. He said: “The time will come when Greece will be guided by great politicians like General Grivas —not by pseudo-politicians vying with the Turks in baiting dollars from America. “Only then will the new peaceful struggle start for enosis without the use of arms,” he said.
