President Eisenhower has been officially invited to stay with the Queen at Balmoral during his trip to Britain later this month, it was announced in London today. The announcement said the President had accepted the Queen’s invitation and would also spend some time at Chequers, the Prime Minister's country residence, about 40 miles from London.
“Other arrangements for the visit will be announced later,” the statement said. “The President plans to leave London for Paris on Wednesday, September 2.” Mr Eisenhower will spend one night at Balmoral.
It will be the President’s first journey to Britain since he took office in 1953.
It is expected that the President will go to Balmoral during the early part of his visit. In their talks at Chequers, the Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) and the President, will survey the whole international scene in preparation for the visit which Mr Khrushchev will make to Washington in mid-September. according to diplomatic sources. The Foreign Ministers of both countries, Mr Selwyn Lloyd and Mr Christian Herter, will join in the Chequers talks. When the full details of the programme are announced, probably early next week, it is expected to show that most of the President’s five days in Britain will be spent in exchanges of views with the Ministers.
However, the people of London undoubtedly will be given opportunities of welcoming Mr Eisenhower to their city on his first visit since he assumed the Presidential office.
