EXPORTS OF N.Z. MEAT

70 p.c. Controlled By Overseas Firms

“One wonders if overseas concerns should have an increasing share of the control of meat going out of this country,” Mr W. M. Cleland, general manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., said this week. Speaking at a Christchurch Accountant Students’ Society luncheon, Mr Cleland said this was “a very debatable question.” He told the students: “It may surprise you to know that about 70 per cent, of the meat exported from this country is exported by overseas-owned and controlled concerns.” Mr Cleland said that so far this year 422,500 tons of meat had been exported, but final figures were not yet available. He outlined to the students the work done by the freezing companies in New Zealand and the choices open to farmers for selling their stock. Getting stock from the farm gate to the market required “terrific organisation,” Mr Cleland added.
