HOUSING FOR SOLDIERS
Contracts Let At Burnhant
Authority has been given for two contracts to provide six new houses at Burnham Military Camp. They will be homes for the families of soldiers returning from Malaya with the Ist Battalion later this year, and will be built by private builders. A start Would be made almost immediately, the Army’s . chief district engineer (Major E. Boyle) said yesterday. Major Boyle said that tenders were being called for a further 18 residential units at Burnham for soldiers of the battalion. Roading work for these had already begun and was being carried out as a joint enterprise by the Army and the Ministry of Works. This morning, Army engineers will begin reconstructing one of the accommodation blocks at Bumham to bring messing, sleeping, washing and toilet facilities all under one roof for single members of the unit.
There will be a central, covered and heated corridor through the dormitary section and toilet facilities will be connected to the mess by a covered way.
