FLYING BOATS FOR R.N.Z.A.F.

“Five Years Life In Sunderlands” (New Zeaiana Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. It will be three years before the Government places an order for replacement aircraft for New Zealand’s maritime defence Sunderland flying-boats, the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly) said In Auckland on Saturday. ‘"There are five years of life left in those Sunderlands yet,” he said. “Furthermore, we haven’t got the money. We’ve got a lot of defence equipment to pay for now.” Mr Connolly said he was, however, more qf an aircraft advocate than a ship enthusiast, but the original order for four Whitby frigates would eventually be taken.

The delivery of four Whitby frigates for anti-submarine defence was recently cut back to two frigates, pending consideration of maritime aircraft offering on the market. “Take the Martin—the only flying-boat defence aircraft being made now” said Mr Connolly “That costs over £1 million. But you can buy four of those for the cost of one frigate.”
