EMERGENCY LANDING
Boeing’s Power System Fails NEW YORK, July 19. A Boeing 707 Jet airliner with 120 person* aboard landed safely at Idlewild Airport last night after its hydraulic power system had failed during a flight from Los Angeles. The aircraft made a low pass over the airport control tower before landing to permit officials to make certain the landing wheels were down and locked. The crew had lowered the landing gear manually. It was the fifth case of landing gear trouble encountered by a Boeing 707 jet. United Press International reported. A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Steven Derounian (Republican, New York) asked the Federal Aviation Agency to order the immediate grounding of all Boeing 707's in passenger service until the hydraulic systems have been “corrected." Last week-end, a transatlantic Pan American World Airways plane with 102 passengers aboard made a dramatic landing here with two of its landing wheels gone. They dropped off during take-off for London.
Crash vehicles stood by last night as the American Airlines plane landed with its 112 passengers and crew of eight.
