NEWSPAPER STRIKE

Publication Till Wednesday (N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) (Rec. 9.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 5. Britain’s national newspapers will be published until next Wednesday, but union leaders were pessimistic last night about a settlement of the printing wages and hours dispute which has closed down about 1000 provincial newspapers.

The national newspapers’ which are not involved in the two-weeks old dispute between the provincial proprietors and 10 trade unions, are threatened with shutdown because work has stopped in factories manufacturing the printing ink they use.

The Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, owners of the 46 London morning, evening, and Sunday papers, haVe an agreement under which if one paper must cease publication all the others do so as well.

Some were running short of ink, but yesterday at talks with the National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants the union leaders agreed to let the papers pool their ink supplies. Before this concession the London newspapers anticipated appearing tomorrow for the last time, but now they will be able to carry on until Wednesday. In Liverpool, Mrs Bessie Braddock, M.P. for the town, led a march of 2000 trade unionists past the offices of the Liverpool “Daily Post and Echo,” where an emergency edition is being published. They shouted: “ ‘Echo’ is black. Don’t buy it.”
