HEAVY RAIN IN CITY

Hail At Sumner And Redcliffs

Christchurch last night had its first heavy rain for more than a month. A brief but spectacular electrical storm preceded the first heavy shower in the city about 10 p.m. It hailed heavily in the SumnerRedcliffs area, and there was still half an inch of hailstones and Ice lying on the ground in Sumner at 10.15 p.m. The Sumner area appeared to be the worst affected. There was heavy rain in the middle of the city, but it soon eased. At Harewood the Weather Office reported only light showers. A fall of snow at Arthur’s Pass late last evening caused the Automobile Association (Canterbury) to warn motorists not to use the road overnight. A spokesman for the association said that motorists should not use the pass until a grader worked on it this morning. Chains would be necessary, he said.
