POST-PRIMARY COUNCIL
Views Of West High School
“The establishment of a branch of the Education Department in Christchurch would not, in my opinion, remove the need for some such local post-primary schools’ council as exists at present. This department would have all, or most, of the South Island to cater for and the need for local, unified interest and concern would still exist,” the headmaster of Christchurch West High School (Mr C. A. Noble) told a meeting of the school’s board of governors. Mr Noble was commenting on a letter from the Christchurch Post-Primary Schools’ Council advising that a standing committee had been set up to consider any suggestions on how the council could be improved. “Recent discussions have suggested that the present set-up for the Christchurch Post-primary Schools’ Council may require modification,” he said. “I know of no move from this school to have the present set-up changed. The present system works admirably as far as I am concerned. The council provides a first-class accounting service at economical rates and the maintenance department gives splendid service." Discussing the position in relation to all the Christchurch postprimary schools, Mr Noble said: “The need for having a central organisation, with an over-all interest in the post-primary education for the area is, in my opinion, essential. A subdivision on the basis of sectional interests would, I feel, only react unfavourably on both sections.”
The board of governors then passed a resolution stating that the views expressed by Mr Noble were the view of the board.
