STEWART ISLAND RUN
Relief Steamer Not Available
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, July 3.
The Canterbury Steam Shipping Company has denied that it has a ship available for the BluffStewart Island service. The statement that it had offered a suitable vessel was made at a public meeting at Half Moon Bay. In a letter to its Invercargill agents, the head office of the Canterbury company advises that it was “very concerned” on reading the report and was emphatic in denying that an offer had been made.
The company said that it was at present short of tonnage on the coast and was doing everything possible to maintain an efficient coastal service. It had no vessel available to give relief on the Stewart Island ferry service. Mr N. L. Whipp, chairman of the Stewart Island Council, said that an offer was made to him over the telephone. He was told that the call came from Christchurch and the person who had made it claimed that he represented the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company.
