Milers Outclassed By Jesse Owens At Timaru
Jesse Owens outclassed 17 - opponents over a mile and 35 yards in the Doncaster Handicap, the principal race and first leg of the main double at i the South Canterbury Jockey Clubs winter meeting which concluded at Washdyke on Saturday. The Doncaster Handicap-Was the second win in open company for* the. four-year-old Booby Trap entire which carries the colours of his Waimate trainer P. H. R.' Andrews. Two starts and three ‘ weeks earlier he had been successful against the open sprinters at Oamaru.
On Saturday Jesse Owens was competently ridden by the Wingatui apprentice, E. E. O’Brien, who had him in the middle of the field for the first half-mile. When sent after the leaders on the home turn Jesse Owens responded brilliantly. He disposed of his nearest rivals with a minimum of effort in the run home and won by a leisurely five lengths. Jesse Oweng was the third choice of win and place betters and also on the double, in which he carried 4570 10s tickets in a total pool of £20,445 ss. The second leg of this double, the Taiko Hack Handicap, resulted in $ narrow but plucky win for the Wingatui trained topweight, King Cassock. Like Jesse Owens, King Cassock also races in the interests of his trainer. He is a member of R. Heasley's team. Although he had been successful in the corresponding event on the first day, the Cassock six-year-old was at generous odds. His win supporters received a dividend of £l5 Bs. His double dividend with Jesse Owens was £142 for £l. This was shared by the holders of 476 5s units on the combination.
The meeting was held in fine but overcast weather and there was a good attendance. The track was in good order. On-course investments amounted to £25,930, including £3853 10s on the doubles, compared with £32,157 on the second day last year, a decrease of £6227. The total for the two days was £50,830, against £68,225 last year, a drop of £17,395. In a desperate finish for the minor money Well Cut ‘beat Royal Avon by half a head for second. Beau Revere juat nosed Ration Time out of fourth place, a length back. Then came Lord Fane, Aquarius. Nehru, Kinsimm and Lightning Boy. The win favourite, Marsana. was eleventh and those next were Coinalot. Hannibal. Subside. Nairn Bridge. Ratton Time was theft a slender third ahead of Well Cut and Royal Avon was continuing his run wider out. None of these, however, looked likely to reduce Jesse Owens’s winning break. The Second Leg *■ King Cassock completed a meritorious double for the meeting when he carried top-weight of 9-8 to a narrow victory over Timely Boy in the second leg of the T.A.B.double. the Takio Hack Handicap, Half a head separated them at the end.* In a spectacular finish for third, a length back, Pendennis beat Settler by half a head and Supreme Effort was a head away fifth. Copper Maid, a weakening sixth, just shaded Vivien Leigh and Fairy King led In the others.
Settler was last away and Pendennis and Ballormia drifted in the first furlong. Timely Boy held the trailing position behind Keith’s Luck to the straight and King Cassock was two places further back, behlhd Orderly and Copper Maid, on the outside of Supreme Effort. Timely Boy wrested the lead from Keith's Luck at the furlong. Supreme Effort moved through beside the fence and was only a neck back King Cassock was then on the outside at Timely Boy’s quarters Orderly. Keith's Luck and Cepptr Maid were dropping out and Pendennis and Settler were both making ground further back.
The last < half furlong was a battling one and it was close to the line when King Cassock gained his slight advantage
