SOUTH CANTERBURY COMPETITION
Geraldine Seems Sure' Of Skinner Cup Win
(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, July 5. Four points ahead of Celtic—their nearest rival—with only two series of matches to be played. Geraldine seem certain to win the 1959 Skinner Cup honours in the South Canterbury Rugby Union's senior competition. On Saturday, Geraldine stalled off a late challenge from Celtic to win 14-13; a points margin which rather flattered Celtic. as the country team had much the better of play for most of the game. The Geraldine pack got a stranglehold on the game early in the second half. With a big weight advantage, the forwards dominated control in the line-outs and scrums, and they also played with fine drive in the open. Outstanding in the pack were the fast-breaking G. Norton and G. Sugrue, and the sturdy frontranker, P. Gresham, who was a tower of strength in the tight. The half-back, R. Christie, played an excellent game and was a sound general. For Geraldine, J. Ellery scored a try. N. Bain kicked three penalties and a conversion. For Celtic. J. Cole and J. O’Donnell scored tries. B. Richards converted both tries, and kicked a penalty. Waimate beat Zingari, 9-5, in the early game at Fraser Park. At Temuka, the home team beat Old Boys, 22-5, and at Fairlie, Old Boys beat Mackenzie, 9-5.
Skinner Cup points are: Geraldine 21, Celtic 17. Temuka 16. Waimate 15, Zingarl 11, Old Boys 8, Star 6, Mackenzie 2.
