THE 49-STAR FLAG of the United States will come into official use today (Independence Day). This photograph shows President Eisenhower displaying the new flag at a ceremony proclaiming Alaska as the forty-ninth state of the Union. The flag has seven rows of seven stars, with the even-numbered rows indented so that the design is staggered. In the old flag there are six rows of eight stars. A fiftieth star is likely to be added soon, Hawaii having voted for recognition as a state after Congressional approval.
