WEATHER AT LINCOLN

Land Restored In June Drying winds early in June, then fine frosty weather and below-average rainfall restored land to near normal conditions after the record rainfall of May, which had drowned out many areas, according to the summary of meteorological observations made at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. Although 11 rainy days were recorded during the month, true rain fell on only two days, amounting to o.4oin—very little compared with the 2.Bin that fell in June, 1958. The weather on the other nine days was foggy, with heavy dews.

There were 19 frosty days during the month, eight fewer than last year. The heaviest frost occurred on June 26, when the grass minimum terrptrature was 14 degrees. The lowest temperature of the month, 21 degrees, was recorded on the same day. A considerable area of autumnsown wheat went into the ground in good order, and fine weather enabled the final feeding off of lucerne stands so that a start could be made with forage crops. This led to the conservation of hay, which was in short supply at the beginning of the month. General cultivation was also possible.

Sunshine wag 40 hours above normal at 1523 hours for the month, and the mean temperature was 413 degrees. With the fine weather general farm work which was neglected the previous month was brought up-to-date, and on dry land deep digging was possible. After May, when work was almost impossible, cleaning up and pruning could be carried out in home gardens during June.
