ARMY EXPANSION IN RICCARTON
Discussions Held This Week
file Quartermaster-General of the Army (Brigadier J. R. Page) was in Christchurch this week making an investigation of the military workshops expansion in Riccarton road. Work on new construction for the Southern Military District engineer squadron’s headquarters was recently halted when the Riccarton Borough Council protested that the project was counter to its residential zoning in its undisclosed planning scheme. Accompanied by the district commander (Brigadier J. T. Burrows) and the officer commanding the engineers (Major E. Boyle) Brigadier Page made several calls, including one to the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority, and one to the Town Clerk of, Riccarton * (Mr R. Sarjeant). “We discussed town planning in relation to possible rebuilding of the headquarters on the exist-' ing site in Riccarton road or on other alternative sitings,” Mr Sarjeant said.
“Brigadier Page now has both sides of the picture and will now no doubt discuss the subject with the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly),” said Brigadier Burrows.
