INCREASE IN CRIME
Offences Against Property (New Zealand Press association/ WELLINGTON, July 3. Recorded crimes and offences during 1958, at a total of 85,153, showed an increase of 3155 over the 1957 figures, the Commissioner of Police (Mr W. S. Brown), said in bis annual report to parliament The more serious crimes of violence and disorder, theft conversion of motor vehicles, breaking and' entering, fraud, false pretences and forgery, and indecency and sex, at 40,144, was an increase of 2095, against an increase of only 1060 for the less serious crimes and offences. The increases which cause the greatest concern are in crimes against property, and the large increase in breaking and entering is alarming, said the report The increase in crime detection was, however, more heartening. The overall success for serious crimes was 48.50 per cent, or 5.22 per cent better than last year. Earlys detection meant* less crime. The mounting rate of breaking and entering offences Would not be arrested until more of the criminals were met in the early stages of their operations, said the report
