Rowing HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA

The Americans provide the strongest opposition to the home entries with six crews and one sculler. The notdß Australian sculler, Stuart Mackenzie, will compete with the old Oxford Blue, Christopher Davidge, in the double sculls as well as bidding to win the single Diahnond Sculls for a third successive year. As always, the highlight of the four days of racing will be the Grand Challenge Cup for eights. The entry, as usual, is small but select. America is represented by Harvard University. Their four British rivals are Isis (Oxford), London. Leander, and Thames. The Isis crew is the first university eight to contest the event for 100 years. It contains the nucleus of the crew which beat Cambridge in April. Their race against Harvard (believed sure to beat London) in the semi-finals on Friday, will probably be the highlight of the regatta. Second Round Queen's University, of Belfast, was the only other visiting crew in action today, and they entered the second round of the Thames Cup. Poland’s ace sculler, Teodor Kocerka, was withdrawn from the Diamond Sculls, leaving Australia’s Stuart Mackenzie with a virtual walk-over in the highlyranked single sculls event. Kocerka scratched from the event because he was delayed in Warsaw by passport difficulties. A Polish four, due to meet the Dutch crew Kerens in the Stewards’ Cup tomorrow, are expected to arrive in time.
