New British Jet Engine

(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 1. A British aircraft engine firm has designed a jet engine which can be switched from forward to vertical flight, the British Society of Aircraft Constructors announced today. The engine, designed by Bristol-Siddeley, would enable a very high-speed aeroplane to have a very short or even vertical, take-off.

“Details are still secret, but it is known that the engine’s thrustweight ratio is extremely high, and that its designed fuel consumption is low,” the announcement said. Thrust is provided through ducts for both direct lift and forward flight.
