HIGH DAM AT ASWAN
Nasser Approves Soviet Plans CAIRO, June 30. President Nasser last night signed a decree approving final plans for the Russian-backed £460 million Aswan high dam project—the operation from which Britain and America withdrew in 1956. The final plans have been amended by Russia—cutting about £6 million from the original estimate, the semi-official Cairo newspaper, “Al Gomhouria,” Mid today.
The project would be completed in 1968. Russia has promised a £35 million credit to build the first stage of the dam in the next three years.
