Trade Unions
Sir,—Replying to R. G. Armstrong, democracy is rule by majority vote whether it be politics, unions, or any other society. Has it ever occurred to him that forty determined people in each branch of a union could change its whole policy? “Ham"’ can rest assured that the law makes it compulsory for every “worker” to belong to an industrial union, but government statistics show that some 50 per cent, are lawbreakers —a sad reflection pn union organisation. While the law ompels workers to be members, this same law makes, np provision for workers to ggin redress against unions wfien reaired. Comment on this onesided - arrangement would be appreciated from Government and Opposition and union officials. “Ham” is correct in his assumption that under compulsory unionism, victimisation does take place and pays dividends to the perpetrators.—Yours, etc., DEMOCRATIC UNIONIST. July 1, 1959.
