LAWN TENNIS Women Semi-Finalists Decided At Wimbledon
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, July 1. The last two British women, Angela Mortimer, a favourite for the title, and Ann Haydon, departed from the singles at Wimbledon yesterday. Three of the four who reached the semi-finals, Sandra Reynolds, of South Africa, Maria Bueno,' of Brazil, and Sally Moore, of the United States, are 20 years old or less.
Only the fourth. Darlene Hard of the United States, a player of considerable international experience, is older. She is 23. When she defeated Miss Mortimer. 7-5. 8-6, Miss Reynolds became the first South African to reach the semi-finals since Mrs Sheila Summers, in 1947. The South African's most powerful forehand drive was her matchwinning stroke in a dour 73minute centre court duel. Miss Hard, who missed the 1958 championships because of medical studies, also spent 73 minutes on the chilly centre court in beating the British lawn tennis and table tennis international, Miss Haydon. 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. On court one, superior power took Miss Bueno and Miss Moore to victory. Miss Bueno, though making errors, defeated Germanborn Miss Edda Buding, 6-3. 6-3, and Miss Moore scored a 6-3, 6-2 victory over a dogged opponent in Yola Ramirez, the Mexican conqueror of the topseeded Christine Truman on Saturday.
