The tackling of the Victoria backs, especially by the second five-eighths, J. B R Park, and the centre threequarters r. J Ryan, upset manypromising Canterbury movements in the first quarter- and any breaks from loose play were quickly smothered by a determined cover defence ■The forwards were evenly matched in lineouts and scrums, but Canterbury had the better of the rucks, particularly at crucial stages when the ball was urgently needed.
-Canterbury scored first when J..D. Pask. left wing three-quarters, bustled the Victoria backs, picked up a dropped nail and scored in the corner.

try when he came into the first five-eighths position and forced his way over near the posts He converted his try. There were no further tries scored, all the rest of the points coming from penalty goals from handy positions. Dineen kicked one for Canterbury and the full-back. - P. C. Osborne, kicked two for Victoria. In the last mmute, Victoria had a chance to draw the game when the big forward. J Williams, intercepted a pass and opened up a big gap for the line, 45 yards away. A try under the posts seemed certain, when Pask appeared after a tremendous burst, and tackled Williams hard, two yards from the posts. As he fell Williams threw the ball forward over the goal-line, where it was . pounced on ' by a Victoria player. However, the referee ruled the throw a forward pass and Canterbury cleared from the scrum. For the University of Canterbury. Pask. Davison, and Dineen scored tries.
