Shirley Boys’ High School won the junior Rugby, the hockey, and the Soccer in annual matches played yesterday against the Taieri High School. The visiting team was successful in the senior Rugby matches Rugby
Great weight in the forwards and a fast, penetrataing back line enabled Taieri to beat Shirley by 22 points to 6. With possession from much of the set play and from rucks, the Taieri backs were quick to seize their opportunities, and scored frequently from midfield breaks
Giving a polished display of open Rugby, Shirley overwhelmed Taieri by 33 points to 0, in the under Bst 71b Rugby match. Shirley gained superiority in the forwards towards the latter stages of the first half, and scored most of its points through combined movements between forwards and backs Soccer A good game was played, although on a small-sized field. Shirley, which won 5,-2. combined better and was more enterprising most of the time. The Taieri goalkeeper gave a fine display. Hockey In the game between the first hockey elevens, the score of. 4 goals to 2, in favour of Shirley, was a fair indication of the merits of the teams. Although Taieri often had the home side in trouble, Shirley combined better as a team, and gave a more polished display of stickwork.
