Soviet Diplomat Appointed

The Russian Supreme Soviet today appointed Mr Ivan Kurdyukov, a former Charge d’ Affaires in Peking, as Ambassador to Australia, the first since the Russian Embassy in Canberra was closed in 1954, the Soviet news agency, Tass, reported. Russia broke off diplomatic relations in 1954 when the Australian Government refused to hand over an Embassy official, Mr Vladimir Petrov, who was granted political asylum After defecting to the West. Mr Kurdyukov has been head of the Far Eastern Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1955.
