DEFENCE OF N.Z.

Homeservicemen Concerned

(New Zealand Press, Association) WELLINGTON, June 14. The Homeservicemen’s Association has expressed concern for the defence of New Zealand in a letter to the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly). Stating that the association, since its incorporation in 1943. has interested itself in the question of the defence—one of its objects is “to foster and encourage defence training”—the letter adds that over the years White Papers on the Dominion’s military obligations have “virtually neglected” any reference to the defence of New Zealand, in New Zealand, and by New Zealanders.

“In recent years there has been some evidence of persons skilled in military matters expressing the view that this side of our military obligations is of some considerable importance. We refer in particular to statements made by Colonel L. R. Rudd, who was Military Secretary of the 2nd N.Z.E.F., and by Colonel R. F. Gambrill, of Gisborne, a distinguished soldier in the first World War.” The association has requested the Government to arrange for the issue of a supplementary White Paper dealing with the defence of New Zealand with the resources available.
