Table Tennis MID-CANTERBURY HEADS SUB-ASSOCIATIONS

For the sixth year in succession, the Mid-Canterbury table tennis sub-association won the annual subassociation's contest, which was held in the Selwyn Street Hall on Saturday evening. Mid-Canterbury began the series of victories in 1954, and apart from a drawn contest with Ellesmere in 1957, has held the title alone ever since.

Winners of the men’s and women’s singles events were A. Swanson (Malvern) and Miss B. Taylor (MidCanterbury). The title-holder in the men’s event, E. G. Drewitt (MidCanterbury) did not compete, but Swanson eliminated the 1957 winner, I. Jones (Ellesmere) in a semi-final. He beat M. Boulton, also from Malvern, in the final. Swanson and J. H. Rich (Malvern) won the men’s doubles, a title which Rich won last year with A. J. Hewitt.

The outstanding women players were Misses Taylor and Y. Hart (Malvern), who were ranked eighth and twelfth in Canterbury last year. This pair met in three finals, with Miss Taylor taking the title on each occasion. Her partners in the doubles events were Miss M. McKay and L. Johns. Miss Taylor won the combined doubles for the sixth successive year, having previously taken the title with Drewitt (three times), G. Campbell and B. D. P. William-

Miss Hart, who was a junior last season, showed promise and determination. In a quarter-final match she eliminated Miss C. Rapley, a former representative player, and, although she was outplayed in the final, she showed good attack and defence.

Separate eyents for juniors were held for the first time, with each sub-association sending two boys and two girls. The outstanding players were B. Watkins (Springs), and Misses M. Johnson (Mid-Canterbury) and J. Rich (Malvern). Watkins won two titles and Miss Johnson three. Miss Rich equalled the feat of Miss Hart in reaching three finals without taking a title.
