Wrong House Wrecked
CAPE TOWN, i There was no need to point out the house that was to be wrecked, said the demolition men. ‘•There is only one house in that part of Muizenberg. Leave it to us,” they added.
Then they drove along Windermere road, stopped at an empty ’ house about 25 yards from the' comer of Prince George drive, unpacked their hammers and drills and crowbars and went to work.
First the asbestos hoof came down, followed by the roof beams, and the doors and windows. Only then did they discover it was the wrong house. The house that should have been demolished is an old building at the comer of Prince George drive and Windermere road.
Mr S. Shoolman, of Paarl, owner of the “wrong” house, said: “My house was worth at least £3600. , It had been let, but was vacant when the wreckers started demolishing it. “To add Insult to injury, I have received a letter from the Cape Town City Council threatening me with prosecution for demolishing my house without a demolition order. A building inspector had, apparently, noticed the demolition work and inquired into it”— Reuter. •
