ASSAULTS ON AFRICANS

White Policemen Imprisoned (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) QUEENSTOWN <Cape Province), May 16. Two white policemen, Sergeant Philip Theunis de Wet Nel. aged 39, and Michael Johannes Swart, aged 24, were imprisoned for assaulting*! two African farm labourers with intent to do grievous bodily harm. They were also convicted on eight further counts of assault, and one of assault with intent. Nel was imprisoned for 18 months with compulsory labour, but half the sentence was suspended for two years on condition that he was not found guilty in that period of any offence involving violence.

Swart was sentenced to four years’ compulsory labour.
