COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

Two Concerts Today

The best amateur talent in Christchurch will in two demonstration concerts at the Civic theatre today, provide the climax to the week-long festival organised b. the Christchurch Competitions Society. The concerts will culminate the efforts of 770 performers who since last Saturday have demonstrated their many talents before the footlights of six city stages. Each day from early morning until late at night the excited youngsters have donned costumes and make-up. sat nervously before pianos, given numerous recitations, sung and danced and each, for a particular moment has absorbed some of the glamour of the professional stage. The organisation involved in presenting the record number of entries for this year’s festival has proceeded smoothly and with few difficulties A great asset to the society has been the assistance given by 10 boys from Christchurch Boys’ High School who have creditably performed the duties of runners, doormen and stage hands. “They are a credit to their school and I cannot praise them too highly,” said the secretary (Mr O H Houison) The tap dancing judge (Mr R Wilkin, of Wellington) at the conclusion of last evening’s concert spoke highly of the tap events and said people in Canterbury took them more seriously than anv other centre.

Only one road blocked by flooding remained to be opened late last evening, according to the A.A.C. It is the Leader road from Waiau to Parnassus which is cut by the flooding of Taylor’s stream five miles from the Main North highway. The Diamond Harbour-Purau road which was cut when a section slipped into the sea during the recent heavy rains on Banks Peninsula, was reopened to oneway traffic about 6 p.m. yesterday. Bulldozers had to cut back into the bank alongside the road, 20 feet above the sea. Numerous layers of rock were put in and at one stage slipped away again in the puggy soil left by the ram. However, the contractor finally consolidated the track Still Difficult An A.A.C. spokesman said the weather was clearing, but road conditions were still difficult. A grader was being used north ol the Clarence river yesterday to help cars across shingle fans. Last evening the water had gone down and most of the road had been cleared of shingle. Motorists should be careful of falling stones in the Hundalees.

All serious damage on the roads will be lit at night, until repaired by the Ministry of Works. Slips on the Christchurch to Picton main truck railway tine blocked the tracks on Thursday and yesterday between Claverky and Aoro, Goose Bay and Puketa, and Elevation and Mount Pleasant, near Picton. Slips near the Clarence river blocked the line and the main highway alongside. A goods train travelling to Kaikoura about II pm, on Thursday had just passed through a tunnel at Kahautara. south of Kaikoura, when a slip of rocks blocked iu further passage to the north. This slip also blocked the highway alongside Bulldozers and clearing gangs using shovels cleared mud, rock and gravel from the line and by 5.30 p.m. yesterday the last of the slips had been moved. Kail-car 'today

No passenger trains are scheduled to travel across the cleared sections before the 9.15 a.m. railcar from Christchurch to Picton this morning. But goods traffic began moving through about 5.30 p.m. yesterday. Yesterday rail passengers between Picton and Christchurch were carried by bus on the Christchurch-Kaikoura section. Travellers in each direction were up to two and a half hours late in reaching their destinations Men started working early yesterday to clear the tracks, and by mid-afternoon all the slips had been cleared, except for a slip at Ferniehurst, mid-way between Parnassus and Hundalee This was the second slip a’ Ferniehurst in 24 hours, and the biggest of the slips on the line. Kaikoura Flooding

Receding floodwaters from Lyell creek, tn the west end of Kaikoura, which flooded late on Thursday evening, left shingie and fine silt on the road early yesterday morning Little material damage was caused by the flood waters to the shops lining the east side of the road But six inches of water covered the floors of four shops and two garages at one stage Vehicles were moved when the water began to rise and shop goods were lifted to higher shelves The owners had to scrape mud off the floors later In the 24 hours ending 9 a.m «<.B3in of rain had been recorded in the township The heavy overcast clouds had lifted in the late afternbon. letting patches of sunlight through It was fine last evening. A farmer at Fernleigh, seven miles south-west of Kaikoura. recorded 7in at the same time, and had about 18in of floodwater under his house. Another farmer between the Hapuku and Rum rivers recorded 6.75 in in 20 hours up to 9 a.m., 4.6 in of which had fallen in 12 hours.
