Comment By Mr Khrushchev MOSCOW, May 14 The Soviet Prime Minister (Mr Nikita Khrushchev) said today: “We are doing everything to secure good results at the Geneva * conference.” T In a speech at Kishinev, Soviet Moldavia, reported by the Soviet news agency, Tass, he said that first of all it was essential to settle the most important questions—the preservation of peace. and the conclusion of a peace treaty with both German States Mr Khrushchev said that, apparently at the first Geneva meet-
ing, it would hardly be possible ’'■ to achieve agreement on many ’ unsolved questions, because the two sides were adhering to different positions. Referring to German unifica-
X tion. Mr Khrushchev again emphasised that this was a question concerning the Germans themselves. Tass said. a Mr Khrushchev added: “If the .'J Western Powers will not sign a peace treaty with Germany, then the Soviet Union will sign a peace treaty with the German J " Democratic Republic.” Mr Khrushchev said West Berlin must become a free city, and added that Russia did not want to meddle in the life of the West Berlin population “The German Democratic Republic guarantees the links between the free city and all countries with which its population wants to deal.” Mr Khrushchev said He said it was difficult to imagine what aim the West German Foreign Minister. Dr Heinrich £ von Brentano. was pursuing, by refusing to meet in the same room the East German Foreign L Minister. »- “I think sooner or later Dr. von Brentano will have to meet representatives of the German Democratic Republic. He cannot escape it” Mr Khrushchev said
