U.S. VISIT BY KHRUSHCHEV
Early August Thought Likely Time (JV z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 13. Administration officials expect the Soviet Prime Minister (Mr Khrushchev) to come to the United States this year—either for a summit conference or an American tour, the American Associated Press reported today. Authorities were reconciled to such a visit, even though they realised it might turn out to be a propaganda circus with Mr Khrushchev as the ringmaster, the news agency said. The most likely prospect now appeared to be that Mr Khrushchev would combine an appearance at a summit conference, possibly in San Francisco, with a “goodwill” tour of American cities. A date early in August seemed likely.
If tentative plans for a summit meeting bogged down, or if it was held abroad, Mr Khrushchev was expected to make a separate bid for the United States trip he had been angling for. He might link it with the opening of a six-week Soviet exposition starting in New York on June 30. A.A.P. reported. President Eisenhower evaded a direct answer at a press conference today when asked whether he would look favourably on Mr Khrushchev coming to the United States. From Geneva today it was reported that San Francisco appeared to. have the “inside track” as a conference site. A date of August 1 or August 3 was mentioned. Mr George Christopher, the Mayor of San Francisco, has been waging a vigorous campaign to have his city, the birthplace of the United Nations, serve as the meeting place for a new attempt by world leaders to end the cold war. Geneva was believed to be now second choice as a summit site, A.A.P. said. Vienna and Quebec, two other possible choices, appeared to be losing support. Plans For Jindivlk.— Australia is trying to develop the locallydesigned and built Jindivik target aeroplane as a supersonic aircraft, said the Minister of Supply (Mr Alan Hulme) in the House of Representatives.—Canberra, May 14.
