POISONING OF CATS
S.P.C.A. Making Investigations An investigation into three cases of cat poisoning in Ashburton East is at present being made by the Ashburton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, according to a statement made by the inspector (Mr J. R. Reeves) last evening. Mr Reeves said that, so far, the society had been unable to discover who was laying the poison, but further investigations were being made. Stray cats in the Ashburton borough infected with ringworm, eczema and other infectious diseases were still a menace. Mr Reeves said. Last month he had had to destroy 11 diseased cats, but this was higher than the average of eight or nine a month, he said. Duck Feeding During the shooting season, the ducks on the Ashburton Domain pond are starved unless something is done, and at present the society is feeding them with grain and other food that has been given by various firms in Ashburton. The society plans to send some food out to the pond at Fairfield freezing works also, to keep the tame ducks there from starving. Mr Reeves said that the ducks at Fairfield did a good job in keeping the pond clean.
